In this joint publication, IPEA and the Esade Student Finance Society examine the domestic and global reach of India's Tata Empire through four of its most consequential subsidiaries: Tata Motors, TATA Advanced Systems, Tata Electronics, and Air India. Each case study reveals how Tata operates not merely as a profit-driven conglomerate, but as a vehicle for India's broader industrial, technological, and geopolitical ambitions.


Underpinning the analysis is a single thesis: Tata's global expansion is India's industrial strategy in motion — anchored by a philanthropic ownership structure that allows it to pursue long-term national priorities where short-term market logic would not.
