The protégé outgrowing the mentor and drifting into conflict sounds like the plot of a mafia film. Yet, the metaphor feels fitting for the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. What was once a pillar of regional coordination has evolved into an emerging power struggle. Since the mid-2010s, their relationship has shifted from tactical alignment to strategic competition for leadership in the Gulf and adjacent regions.
