The Belt and Road Initiative: Development for All?

Updated: Feb 25, 2025

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was launched by China in 2013 as ambitious global infrastructure project aimed that aims to improve trade and connectivity by building roads, railways, and other transport networks. The project is inspired by the ancient Silk Road, and it has achieved some successes, including creating special economic zones as well as major projects in countries like Indonesia and Ethiopia. The BRI has promised to lift millions out of poverty by 2030. However, it has also found criticism because of the massive debt burdens created, which is linked to "debt-trap diplomacy." Some countries, like Sri Lanka, have struggled to repay loans, leading to financial instability. While some nations benefit, others risk economic hardship, making the overall impact of the BRI debatable.
