NATO celebrates its 75th anniversary as the global security scene trembles

Updated: Feb 25, 2025

"Europe, even before it has managed to shrug off the legacy of the Cold War, is risking encumbering itself with a cold peace."-Yeltsin

As NATO celebrates its 75th anniversary, it is confronted by a new security environment in the world. The U.S.-dominated alliance is faced with fiscal and legal vulnerabilities, where only 11 out of 30 members hit defense spending thresholds in 2023, while the U.S. contributes 70% of the budget. Europe's modest defense investment reflects the controversy about constructing a more independent European security policy. Also, NATO expansion and broken agreements have strained relations with Russia. This anniversary invites reflection on rebalancing NATO's internal dynamics and solving its legal and strategic challenges for a stronger future.
